A short story about me

Welcome to ‘My Gimpy Travels’ where you get to tag along on my destinations where I share a slice of the local experience. So why the weird name? Because “My Cripple Chronicles” was already taken, damn disabled peeps running amok in the domain game. Ha!

My quick back story is I was born and raised in Southern California enjoying the many outdoor activities that one avails themselves to like biking, hiking, surfing and skiing to name a few.

When I retired from a law enforcement career (young) ,I was able to travel extensively working as a body guard/security consultant. In 2012 I relocated to the Washington DC area and set up shop there. Then in April 2017 my world changed.

I went to the hospital with some numbness in my toes and hands. I was admitted and in 24 hours was on life support fighting to stay alive. I contracted a severe case of GBS, Gullien Barre Syndrome and was completely paralyzed.

For the next two years I was in the hospital a total of 18 months learning to walk and talk again. I never got back to full strength but I'm fairly independent now, but nevertheless, a gimp.

Freshly disabled, unemployed, and bankrupt (medical bills -a whole other story), I returned to California and tried living in my small RV van but wasn’t able to manipulate a lot of the systems needed in an RV.

I decided to take my gimpy ass on the road and living overseas was a hell of a lot cheaper than California. After a few trips to Mexico I tried out Colombia and fell in love with Medellin. It hit all the right buttons for me. It has near perfect weather, year round temperatures range in the mid to 70,s to low 80’s. Everything you need is within walking distance and transportation is easy and efficient. Lastly is was affordable, I didn’t have to live paycheck to paycheck worrying if I had enough money to last me the rest of the month.

I have been living in Medellin since 2020, moved a few times, explored a lot and found love along the way. I started photography and trying my best to learn Spanish.

I will have more in-depth blog posts about living abroad, photography, travel and other random subjects.
